What Happens After You Write
Every message lands in a shared editorial inbox monitored by our managing editor and section leads. We read everything, though we can't reply to each note personally given our volume. If your story aligns with an upcoming issue, a senior editor will reach out within five business days to discuss angle, word count, and timeline. Pitches outside our editorial calendar are kept on file for future issues.
For submission guidelines, compensation ranges, and rights agreements, request our contributors' packet after your initial pitch. We pay on acceptance and assign first North American serial rights unless otherwise negotiated.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you accept unsolicited submissions from new writers?
Yes. We commission four to six first-time contributors each quarter across essays, reported features, and photo essays. Send a 200-word pitch with two writing samples to [email protected].
What is your typical response time for pitches?
Most pitches receive a response within ten business days. Features with longer reporting timelines may take up to three weeks for a full editorial review.
Can I republish my piece if you decline it?
Absolutely. We claim no rights to unpublished work. Once declined, the pitch and any submitted materials remain entirely yours to place elsewhere.
Are there any topics you currently are not covering?
We avoid crypto trading advice, unverified health claims, and thinly veiled advertorial content. Our standards apply equally to staff and guest contributors.
